Parkhurst Manages First Campus Store at Bridgewater College

With a proven record of success in increasing board plan participation and retail dining opportunities at Bridgewater College, the Parkhurst Dining team was granted its first opportunity to manage the Bridgewater College campus store. Parkhurst was first awarded Bridgewater’s dining services business in 2012 to bring exciting dining venues and a high level of creativity and imagination to campus dining.

Parkhurst brings the same level of energy and passion to the campus store with sales far exceeding expectations by 15%. According to Mary Speir, Parkhurst general manager of dining at Bridgewater College, “Our team took over the campus store in June. We hit the ground running with less than two months to transition operations, order new inventory, and re-design an environment welcoming to students and their families.”

The majority of the space is dedicated to Bridgewater College logo wear including a variety of athletic and fashionable clothing featuring major brands such as Under Armour, Nike, Polo and Columbia. A spirit shop area offers pompoms, beads and mega phones, while one quarter of the space sells c-store selections such as healthier snacks, candy, beverages, greeting cards, health and beauty, and other sundries.

The team even created a “time out” area where guests can take a break from the shopping and relax in club chairs with a beverage or enjoy a good read from the displayed faculty published books. The store’s décor also features artwork of current and former athletes by local graphic artist Muddy Feet.

Additionally, stadium selling has become increasingly popular. The retail team sell its wears at all of the home football games across from the concession stand, providing convenience to sports enthusiasts who want to purchase spirit wear and something to eat.

“We have changed the feeling of the store, listened to student requests and offer a high level of customer service. Sarah Landis, Parkhurst director of retail for the campus store, along with her team members Amber Smith and Miranda Long (a Bridgewater student), are very welcoming to anyone who walks in.  We have something for everyone,” says Ms. Speir.

In addition to marketing the newly launched store on the college’s web site, students can follow and view Bridgewater College campus store inventory on Twitter and Instagram @bwaterstore. An online store is planned.
