Parkurst Dining, Highmark, Host Farmers' Markets at Camp Hill and Pittsburgh Locations

WHAT:

Highmark at its Camp Hill and Pittsburgh locations, will co-host farmers’ markets with Parkhurst Dining, Highmark’s dining services provider.  Highmark associates will be able to conveniently purchase fresh produce grown at local farmers, while learning where and how their food is grown.

Fresh food that is showcased at the farmer markets’ are from farms and food providers that Parkhurst partners with through FarmSource, a sustainable sourcing program started in 2001 by Parkhurst and its parent organization, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group.

One of the most successful and recognizable local sourcing programs in Pennsylvania, the idea behind FarmSource  is an initiative to find and partner with some of the finest local growers, family-owned farms and producers of food in our communities.  Parkhurst procurement, sourcing and sustainability professionals personally meet with farmers, food production owners and artisans, tour their farms and facilities, and hand-select the produce to ensure Highmark guests receive healthy, natural and fresh food.

Today, FarmSource boasts relationships with more than 200 farmers in the communities that Parkhurst services.  Through FarmSource, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group purchased more than $18 million in local foods in 2010 which supports the continued growth for local agriculture by more than 20%.

Local food providers and Parkhurst Dining staff will be onsite in Camp Hill and Pittsburgh to sell their foods and raise awareness about the benefits of buying local. By purchasing foods from these vendors, Highmark employees/associates not only are leading a healthy lifestyle through their diet, but are helping to sustain our local economy and the planet.  
Vendors include local, quality providers of:

  • Dairy products, including a variety of cheeses
  • Free-range meats
  • Jams, jellies, preserves and fruit butters
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables  
  • Specialty products, including baked-goods and dip mixes
  • Herbs and spices
  • Artisan breads

The Parkhurts chefs will also be available to provide employees with recipes and tips for using the produce.
