Parkhurst Dining Provides On-The-Go “Basics” at Colleges and Universities
Brown-Bag Sandwiches Like Mom Used to Prepare

PITTSBURGH, PA, September 2, 2009 – In response to college students who want a quality to-go sandwich, but don’t want to pay the price of a higher-end item, Parkhurst Dining responds by adding the “Basics” simple and inexpensive brown-bag sandwiches and wraps just like mom used to prepare and package, to its On-The-Go program at all Parkhurst-managed colleges and university retail locations.

Costing no more than $3.29 per sandwich/wrap, the “Basics” are prepared with fresh and quality ingredients on white or whole wheat bread.  A minimum of three “Basics” sandwiches and wraps must be offered daily and may include the following sandwiches: the turkey and Provolone; salami and American cheese; old-fashion peanut butter and grape or strawberry jelly; cheese, lettuce and tomato; and ham and Swiss cheese.  Students may also choose from wraps including: roast beef and cheddar; tuna salad; turkey and provolone; and ham and Swiss cheese.

The packaging is also basic – sandwiches are cut diagonally and packaged in bio-degradable zip-lock bags.   This makes it easy for students who only care to eat half now and pack the other half of their sandwich in their book bag to enjoy later.  Wraps are also packaged in bio-degradable lip tape bags where a moisture barrier around the wrap sandwich prevents leakage.

The “Basics” program was first piloted at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, where Parkhurst General Manager of Retail Nick Zolak, explains why these selections are so popular in the campus retail and concession venues.  “This program was an initiative with the student government organization at Bucknell where students asked us to create a lower-end, lower-costing sandwich.  The program is popular and gives our guests several choices between the basics and upscale sandwiches, while gives us the opportunity to capture new sales.”

Parkhurst also offers pre-packaged fruit, desserts, salads, sushi and soups as part of their On-The-Go program.  All food items are labeled with a product description featuring ingredients, where our foods are grown, nutritional values, price point and reheating instructions for hot items.
